Josh's RV Journey

Updated 11/2 (10:00pm CST)

Some background: During the spring of '99, I got the itch to just go out on the open road.

So, I started teaching myself all about RVs.  For the months of May and June I looked at a gazillion RVs, and finally decided to buy one: a '93 Pace Arrow Diesel. It's huge. 36 feet long. Queen-size bed in the back. Big living room. Two TVs (w/satellite), VCR, CD player, GPS tracking and routing, 4-burner gas stove, oven, convection microwave, refrigerator/freezer, ice maker, washer/dryer, real toilet, real shower, heat, air conditioning, levelling jacks, backup camera ... all the amenities of home (and more :-) It's not exactly "roughing it." Here are some more pictures.

I'll be taking my BMW with me, on a trailer, behind the motorhome, so I have something small, fun, and maneuverable to drive around to the sites. And of course, I'll have my mountain bike with me for some fun exercise where it makes sense. Maybe I'll even hit some golf driving ranges along the way.

The plan is (as of the time of this writing) to leave the San Francisco Bay Area in early September, and drive around seeing the sites through Halloween or so. In the middle of all of this is a week in Topeka, KS, where I go every September to the SCCA Solo II National Championships. This is an autocross event. See this old page for some of my autocross exploits. Suffice it to say here that this is my 10th time competing in the Nationals. I won once, back in '96. I hope I can do it again. Between Nationals and mid-October, I'll wind my way around the country, ending up in Philadelphia, where my brother is getting married. After the wedding, it's back home (slowly).

I will maintain a photo journal of my trip on these pages. Check back for updates! Hopefully I'll be able to update this every couple of days, but I can't say for sure how successful I'll be with that. Network connectivity might be tough to come by.

And hey, it might be lonely on the open road. Feel free to send me e-mail or send me a pager message. The pager business might not work where cellular coverage is weak. But I'd love to hear from you.

Don't forget -- if I'm in your area, or if you know of something I shouldn't miss near wherever I am, make sure to let me know! Send me e-mail, or even better, page me, and I'll give you a call.

Well, the trip is over now. Please enjoy this travelogue, and let me know your reaction to reading it!
