September 28th -- Zigzagging across Michigan

First look at Lake Michigan

Mackinac Bridge, in the fog

Yet another rainy day. This one truly, totally, 100% rainy, all day long.

I started out heading south, towards Lake Michigan. I thought I'd skirt along there until I hit the Mackinac Bridge. The routing stuff turned me onto a county road, which looked decent enough, until it turned into a dirt road 5 miles down the way. And stayed dirt for 10 miles. Well, everything was filthy anyway.

I got to Lake Michigan and turned east. Crossed the bridge, then headed west to continue along the edge of Lake Michigan. At this point it started raining really hard. The coastline was very nice, but how much rainy coastline can a guy take? I didn't even take pictures at some of the theoretically best spots, because I didn't want to get out and get wet and dirty. The Sleeping Bear Dunes were pretty cool though from the parking lot.

Then southeast towards Detroit. I thought I'd have some time today to see some of the Detroit-area attractions, but with the rain and everything it took a bit longer than I expected. Actually fortunately it stopped raining at about 6:30. I pulled into the campsite, in the metro Detroit area, a town called New Hudson, at about 7:15. Got hooked up and unloaded the car, and then it started raining. Flipped on the TV and there were some major thunderstorm warnings. Just then, a huge bolt of lightning was visible out the front window, and then it all started. Massive storm, huge lightning bolts, thunder rocking the world, raindrops an inch across. While the lightning and thunder didn't really seem to subside, the rain did, so I headed out for dinner.

Just as I pulled into the parking lot at a nearby Chilis, the rain started again in a hugely major way. I got totally drenched running to the building. It was kind of amusing actually.

When I got back, I was totally unable to get the cellular modem to work (it only seems to work when I'm roaming -- now that I'm in a "home" area, it refuses to comply).

So, not much to say today. Not much happened, other than lots and lots of rain. And I'm still in Michigan. It seems like I've been in Michigan forever!
