October 20th -- Catching up

The ferry arrives and unloads

A couple of others, not running today for some reason. They are like small Nantucket ferries.

Snug as a bug in a rug

A rare view of the roof

The Cape May harbor is nice, I guess

Still loading ...

Underway!

Nice-looking beaches here too

Lots of gulls follow, even though we're not allowed to feed them.

The foggy hills in the distance (these pictures are from Monticello) are beautiful with the foliage

I liked this place. He designed it to be functional, and that surprised me.

I'm not sure how functional this entry adornment is, though.

The garden is still active

It's been a long time since I've written anything. I want to try to catch you all up, so I'll go through this pretty quickly.

My laptop is dead. I'm using a backup that Dad gave me, an old P-90 Toshiba. It's hellishly slow, but I can at least still navigate with the GPS stuff. What I can't do is get pictures from my camera, so although I'm still taking them, I won't be able to show them to all of you until I get my laptop fixed (probably not until I get home.)

On Columbus Day, Monday the 11th, Dad and I finished up our little drive. We drove from upstate NY, through southern VT, to the Manchester NH airport to pick up his car, then down to his office in Salem, NH, where we picked up Mark and Michelle's wedding present from me. I got them a restored chairlift chair from Telluride, which has been set up as a loveseat/swing. It's very cool.

Dad and I then drove to my parent's house in Sudbury, MA, where I spent the next two nights. On Wednesday morning, Mom and I took off for Philadelphia for the wedding.

Soon after leaving CT and crossing into NY, it was time to refuel. We got off at an exit that claimed to have a diesel station. At the end of the exit ramp, it said that the diesel station was a ways off to one direction, and there was another exit a ways the other way. We headed towards the diesel station. When we got there we discovered that they were tiny and maneuvering was going to be tough, but I pulled up to the diesel pump, only to discover that they were all out! It took 10 minutes to extricate the rig, but we headed to the other station. They don't sell diesel. But this was a tiny windy road, and there was no place to turn around. So, we saw some beautiful countryside as we wound our way down to the next exit.

Back on the highway, we did it all again. Got to an exit with 4 stations. Headed there (miles off the highway), but none of them had diesel, and turning around was again essentially not possible. So, we toured some more of the countryside. Eventually made it back to the highway, about 60 miles later, never having found any diesel. We got off in Tarrytown, NY, a pretty big town that was sure to have some diesel, but just after pulling off – the motorhome stalled. Oh well. Pulled off to the side, unloaded the BMW, found some diesel a mile away, bought a 2-gallon can and 2 gallons of fuel, started the motorhome, reloaded the BMW … the whole thing was only about 30 minutes of downtime. We were lucky.

We then stopped at the Crayola museum in Easton, PA, and then headed down to Mark and Michelle's house in Dresher, PA, north of Philly. Their neighbors are active motorhomers and offered to move theirs to their backyard so I could park mine next to their driveway. Very convenient!

Spent Wednesday night through Monday night at M&M's house (except for Saturday night, the night before the wedding, when Mark (and me) got kicked out of the house). The wedding was fantastic and everything went great. And my gift was well-received too, and it's now hanging on the front porch.

Left there Tuesday morning, after M&M left for their honeymoon (Hawaii). I drove down to Atlantic City, then to Cape May, the southern tip of NJ. From there, I took the ferry down to Lewes, Delaware. Kind of cool to put the whole rig on a ferry. Then drove down the outer banks of VA and stopped for the night at an absolutely huge campground on the eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay. Gorgeous place.

Next morning, I got up and headed over/under the bridge-tunnel to Norfolk, VA. Then headed west towards Williamsburg. Unfortunately, today was a very rainy day, and my first scheduled stop, Colonial Williamsburg, didn't seem to be very attractive in this weather. So, I skipped it and just continued on to Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's home), in Charlottesville, VA. Amazing place, I really enjoyed it, even in the rain.

I then headed south on US-29 towards NC. I wanted to spend the night in or around Greensboro, NC, but there is something huge going on there and none of the campsites could fit me in. Sigh. So, I stopped just before the NC border, north of Danville, VA. I did stop for dinner in a tiny town called Tight Squeeze, VA. Love the name.

Tomorrow I will stop for a while at the BMW Zentrum museum/factory outside Spartanburg, SC, which is where my BMW was built. After that, it's down to Florida, to the Kennedy Space Center. Then westward we go, heading home.
